Caravaggio (28 September 1571 - 18 July 1610) was the greatest Italian painter of the 17th Century Trained in Naples, Malta and Sicily between 1593 and 1610. He is commonly placed in the Baroque school, of which he was the first great representative.Caravaggio was considered enigmatic, fascinating, rebellious and dangerous. He burst upon the Rome art scene in 1600, and thereafter never lacked for commissions or patrons, yet handled his success atrociously.
Style: Exhilirating realism. He is noted for sensational and vivid subjects, in which heads are severed, lust and corruption are common. His technique is theatrical and wild, yet clear and liberating. Tense compositions and dramatic lighting flood engaged subjects. He was often criticised for portraying bilblical figures as normal people.
Psychological Assesment: 'Calling Doctor Freud, Emergency!'.
Fact: The only major artist with serious criminal record (hooliganism and murder). He fled Rome after killing a man, and spent the rest of his life moving around Naples, Sicily and Malta, constantly in trouble because of his violent temperament. Died of malarial fever at age of 38.
