Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (November 24, 1864 - September 9, 1901)

Henri was a French printmaker, draftsman, illustrator and painter.  He was known along with Van Gogh, Cezanne and Gauguin as one of the greatest painters of the Post-Impressionist period.

Henri suffered from congenital health conditions early on his life because of inbreeding, his parents being first cousins.  At age 13, he fractured his right thigh bone and the following year, the left thigh.  And these fractures did not heal properly.  Because of this, his legs ceased to grow.  As an adult, he has an adult-sized torso, but has child-sized legs.  He was only 5ft tall.

Because of his disability, he cannot join any of physical activities; he then turned his attention in his art.  Throughout his 20-year career, Toulouse-Lautrec had done 737 canvases, 275 water colors, 263 prints and posters, 5,084 drawings and some stained glass work, not to mention a number of lost works.

He has mastered at capturing crowd scenes in which the figures were still distinct – his style is highly linear, giving emphasis to contour.  His treatment of his subject has been described as both sympathetic and dispassionate.

Henri has been alcoholic most of his adult life.  He died from complications due to syphilis and alcoholism at the age of 36.  After his death, his mother, Comtesse Adele Toulouse-Lautrec and his art dealer, Maurice Joyant promoted his art.  His mother contributed funds for a museum to be built in Albi, his birthplace, to house his artworks.
